Newtown Democrats’ mission is to elect qualified, electable Democratic candidates for local office and to support county, state, and national Democratic campaigns. We do this by fundraising efforts, canvassing, mail campaigns, newsletters, websites, and social media. We have dedicated volunteers who give their time and skills to support these efforts. Donations to the Newtown Democrats support the endorsed candidates and help supplement campaign resources.
If you believe the old adage that “all politics are local,” please consider supporting your local Newtown Democrats. Here’s what we have accomplished:
School Board
When the Newtown Democrats supported the four “Together for Council Rock Candidates” for the school board in 2023, it gave the Democrats a one-vote majority over GOP candidates who partnered with the Moms for Liberty group (the book banners). In 2025, we expanded the Democratic majority to 6/3.
Newtown Borough
In 2025, Newtown Borough Council maintained its 6/0 Democratic majority by winning all three races (Gina Tognini, Kris Bauman, and Emily Heinz). The Borough also elected its first woman mayor, Democrat Tara Grunde-McLaughlin.
Newtown Township
After a 2025 primary in which nearly twice as many Democrats turned out as Republicans, Democrats Ed Merriman and Melissa Merk were elected to the Newtown Board of Supervisors, retaining the Democratic majority. They were subsequently elected Chair (Merriman) and Vice Chair (Merk) of the board.
Bucks County
Democrats swept Bucks County’s Row Office elections: District Attorney (Joe Khan), Sheriff (Danny Ceisler), Prothonotary (Donna Petrecco), Recorder of Deeds (Robin Robinson), and County Controller (Neale Dougherty). Democrats also swept the Bucks County Court of Common Pleas, with Amy Fitzpatrick, Linda Bobrin, Dawn DiDonato Burke, and Tiffany Thomas-Smith elected as judges.
Pennsylvania
State Supreme Court Justices Christine Donohue, Kevin Dougherty, and David Wecht – all Democrats – were reelected/retained despite an all effort from the GOP to unseat them.
National
Despite Bucks County voting for the GOP ticket in 2024, because of our outstanding canvassing efforts, Newtown delivered for the Democratic candidate, VP Kamala Harris.
We are launching our annual “Members and Friends” membership drive. The suggested donation is $75 or a family membership of $100. All levels of support are welcome. You can even sign up for recurring, automatic monthly donations starting at $5.00.
