Newtown Dems
Our Core Beliefs
Voting Rights for All Eligible Citizens
We engage in, support, and protect democracy. We demand free and fair elections. We oppose gerrymandering, voter suppression, and any other attempts to interfere in the fidelity of our elections.
The right of every citizen to vote and the integrity of our elections are under attack.
We reject baseless claims that elections were corrupted or "stolen," which have eroded public confidence in our electoral systems, and prompted procedural changes that accomplish nothing other than making it harder for Americans to vote.
Decision-Making Based on Evidence
We support candidates who operate with integrity and in the best interests of our community.
We denounce the flood of distortions and outright lies which have become of feature of political discourse.
Government That Serves All People
We prioritize securing and enhancing essential public services – police, fire, good roads, water and sewer – while minimizing cost to the taxpayer.
We promote smart growth which preserves what we love about our community while fostering an environment where businesses, especially local businesses, can thrive.
We support living wages for all workers and strive to create an economic climate which produces well-paying, productive, meaningful jobs.
Healthcare For Everyone
We believe healthcare is a right. We work to expand access to healthcare so that every one of us can obtain the medical care we need at a cost we can afford to pay.
Reproductive Freedom
We support the right of women and of all individuals to make decisions about their own health and well-being, including decisions about contraception, abortion, and hormone care.
We reject any effort to restrict access to abortion, including medication to end an unwanted pregnancy, presently guaranteed by Pennsylvania law.
Great Public Schools for All Students
We love and support our public schools. We work to achieve the highest quality public education for the children of our community.
For students of color and LGBTQ+ students, acknowledgement and respect promotes good mental health and can even save lives.
Students thrive when they see themselves represented in school-based literature and curriculum materials. Everyone, including every student in public school, deserves to be addressed by their preferred name and pronouns. School buildings must be places of inclusion, free from bullying and intimidation.
We reject recent efforts to ban books, to censor teachers, and to purge American history from curricula in public schools, here and everywhere in the United States.
Protection for the Environment
Climate change is real. Long-term, it represents an existential threat to communities nationwide.
A renewable energy future is coming, and municipalities have a role to play. We advocate for more electric car charging stations and solar power.
We work to preserve open space, and, where it occurs, development which minimizes energy use and harm to the environment.
Rights and Freedoms
Newtown is a welcoming community, and we want to keep it that way. We work to promote inclusion and acceptance in our increasingly diverse community.
We welcome people of all races, religions, countries of origin, genders, and abilities.
We oppose efforts to drive members of the LGBTQ+ community out of public view and out of public life. We know that discrimination endangers members of the LGBTQ+ community, especially children.
We believe love is love. We appreciate that families may look different but are nonetheless the same in all the ways that matter.
